“Springtime Pesterers”
When I get to visit West Texas, I love to look at the
distant purple mountains. They look like solid purple walls in the distance.
I wonder what is happening in those mountains. Maybe someone across the
valley in those distant mountains in this picture is looking across the
valley toward this mountain, where these mockingbirds are pestering this
cougar. Perhaps this person is wondering what is happening here. This
scene is north of Ft. Davis, Texas looking south toward Alpine and Marfa.
As an aside, the model for the cougar is named Casey. He is a large cougar
that is a resident of PrideRock Wildlife Refuge, Terrell, Texas. He is
shy and reclusive and generally likes to just stay in his den.

One day, I just sat down by Casey's pen and waited to see
what he would do. After a long while, he came out from his den and went
to
the other end of his pen and started pacing. That is when I got the picture
of him pacing that was used for this painting. While he was pacing, he
would
not have eye contact with me. He was trying to figure out what to do
with me. Finally, he quit pacing and looked at me and we stared at each
other
for a while. Then he came over and layed down against the fence right
in front of me. Through the fence, I put my fingers on him. He then turned
his head and looked away. He was telling me he had decided he could trust
me. That was an experience that I cherish and I will never forget.
Cheers,
Acree
