“Whitetail Doe and Fawn,
North Fork Guadalupe River ”
To enter a paradise on earth, take Texas Highway 39 at Ingram just west of Kerrville, Texas. Here the road starts following the Guadalupe River westward toward the source of the river up in the hill country of Texas. After about four miles you will come to a bridge over the river. This bridge over the Guadalupe River is named Schumacher Crossing. This is the beginning of a Texas paradise.
Schumacher Crossing holds a special place in the hearts of my wife and me. When we were young, the road crossed over the river here on what is called a “low-water crossing.” There were just some large culvert pipes for the river to flow through under the pavement. During floods, the water flowed over the road. There is a wonderful swimming hole here in the crystal clear waters of the river. Huge cypress trees frame the scene. My wife, then Corinne Orr, grew up in nearby Kerrville. She and her high school friends spent countless lazy summer afternoons here. Later, during our college days, when I would visit her in Kerrville, she would take me to Schumacher Crossing. Oh, the memories of when we were young!!!
There is a bridge there now and a road-side picnic area and park. From this little park, you can walk under the bridge up the river to see some beautiful river scenes and falls. I plan to do some paintings of these scenes.
A short distance beyond Schumacher Crossing is the village of Hunt, Texas . In Hunt, take FM 1340 which follows the North Fork of the Guadalupe River westward up the canyon. The scenery is serene and peaceful as the road crosses back and forth over the river on low-water crossings. These crossings are named, Mayhugh, Lone Star, Waldemar, Friedrich, Graham and Wagon Wheel. I hope to do a series of paintings of The North Fork Guadalupe River as seen at these crossings.
This painting, the first of that series, is of a whitetail doe taking her fawn to the river for water in the late afternoon. It is my vision of a paradise on earth.
Cheers,
Acree
