“The Mayhue Crossing ”

Of all of the low water crossings of FM 1340 over the North Fork Guadalupe River, my favorite, by far, is The Mayhew Crossing. I think it is the first crossing after leaving Hunt, Texas and going west on FM 1340.

It is relatively easy to park on the side of the highway here and walk through the tangles of undergrowth on the south side of the crossing to the river. In just a short distance, the river is wide, still and pond like. There are huge cypress and sycamore trees along the banks on both sides. Since the water is relatively shallow and calm here, there are a lot of water lilies and other water plants.

The reflections on the water of the trees, sky and plants are constantly changing. It is like looking at a beautiful landscape through a kaleidoscope. With each season of the year, the scene is very different. I have taken many photographs of the river here through the years. Just about every one of those pictures could be used to make a successful painting.

Songbirds also like this stretch of the river. The musical sounds of their songs drifting through the air while watching them fly from branch to branch in the canopy of the trees up above is like the icing on the cake for this beautiful little heaven on earth.

One of these days, I would like to bring a folding chair, lunch and sketching pads and just spend the day here. This is such a quiet and peaceful place where there is some relief from the day-to-day grind of our many worries.

Cheers,

Acree
